It’s only mid-August but the 2014 harvest has started in various parts of the State, especially for whites that will go into bubbly. We just wrote about the new Malibu Coast AVA and already Casa Dumetz is picking grapes for their sparkling wine. A bit further north in the Santa Barbara AVA, Sauvignon Blanc is being picked in Happy Canyon. Chardonnay picking has just started according to Le Fenetre Wines, also in Happy Canyon. Some parts of Lodi, especially in the eastern hills, they are picking whites, as are some parts of Sonoma. Napa Valley expects harvest to start about two weeks earlier than normal and while the crop might be smaller because of the drought, the quality is expected to be very good. Even Pinot Noir is ahead of schedule by about 30 days on the Central Coast.
