April 29, 2016 – Eight finalists competed in San Francisco on Sunday, April 24 for the coveted title of winner of the Bacardi Legacy Global Cocktail Competition. Gn Chan from Angel’s Share in New York City was named the winner at the end of a tension-filled evening, during which the competitors had to explain their background and their cocktail creation, then make the cocktail for presentation to the judges in front of an enthusiastic audience of 150 while being filmed live for YouTube. And they each had just 10 minutes to work their magic.
The eight finalists were selected from a group of 36 exceptional bartenders from around the world who gathered in San Francisco to be judged, along with a large entourage of international press. The lucky 36 from countries as diverse as Israel and Thailand were in turn selected from literally thousands – we heard 40,000 – entries from 45 countries.
The judging panel represented some of the most influential names in the international bartending and spirits community: Maestro de Ron Bacardi José Sanchez Gavito; renowned New York bartender Julie Reiner; Dale De Groff aka ‘King Cocktail’, and Franck Dedieu who won the competition last year.
Gn Chan, whose tenure behind the bar is less than four years, expressed his gratitude to Shingo Gokan a former BLGCC champion (2012) who offered him a job at Angel’s Share and mentored him. Gn’s drink titled “Venceremos”, which is Spanish for “we will overcome”, is a riff on the Piña Colada. The touch of cucumber juice and sesame oil is a nod to his Asian heritage.
By Gn Chan
1½ parts Bacardi Superior
½ part coconut liqueur
5/6 part pineapple juice
½ part cucumber juice
1/6 part lime juice
1 dash sesame oil
Shake and strain into hurricane or rocks glass with one large ice cube. Garnish with a pineapple leaf.
Venceremos will join other modern classics that have emerged as winners of the competition over the last seven years and are now found in bars across the world. The new legacy cocktails join classic Bacardi cocktails including the Mojito, the Daiquiri, the Cuba Libre, the Piña Colada and the Presidente. Gn Chan, as the winner from the United States, has a busy year ahead of him travelling with Bacardi as an ambassador and serving his Venceremos in some of the finest bars in the world.
