September 16, 2016 – We’re not talking about three liter boxes with plastic taps. It’s a trendy idea in the wedding industry that involves ceremoniously placing a bottle of wine in a special box, with or without love letters to each other, sealed and enjoyed at some future date while sharing memories of the wedding. Like the unity candle, it can become a part of the ceremony, especially in a secular setting. But why not make it a part of the celebration after the ceremony like cutting the cake? Sounds more appropriate to us. There are lots of nostalgic and fun stories to tell about how you found the wine you have both chosen.
It’s a romantic idea but it takes a bit of thought and planning. If the wine is going to be kept for a number of years, it should be stored horizontally to keep the cork moist and it needs a really cool place. Around 55 degrees would be ideal. That’s hard to do and we can envision a couple opening the wine 10 years later that has turned brown tastes like vinegar. Not a good omen for future happiness.
Absent good storage, we’d settle for a really excellent red, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, or a bottle of lovely Champagne to be opened on the first anniversary. We want to keep this marriage together and it is so disappointing to open a treasured bottle of wine only to find it undrinkable. It tends to put the kibosh on romance!
