Cocktails With Fewer Calories for National Vodka Day October 4

September 29, 2016  — For vodka drinkers, every day is National Vodka Day based on the figures supplied by the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States.  While sales have slowed, vodka remains the Number One selling spirit in the U.S. worth $5.8 billion in sales in 2015.  It creates a lot of jobs and brings a lot of joy (and some headaches and hangovers, too) so it deserves its National Day on October 4.

We looked for a new twist and found low-calorie cocktail recipes developed by Blue Ice Vodka.  Blue Ice is the most highly rated American-made potato vodka.  Being grain free it is gluten-free.  It is also non-GMO and has only 52 calories per ounce meaning it has 25% fewer calories than most other distilled spirits.  And with the party season about to begin, we all need to count calories!

Here are five recipes to keep on file for calorie conscious celebrations long after National Vodka Day has gone by.  We really like that two of them – Blue Ice Vodka Spritzer and Teenage Dream – can be made for a group.

Blueberry Basil Vodka Tonic

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 oz Blue Ice Vodka
  • Tonic Water
  • ½ cup agave nectar
  •  ½ cup water
  • ⅓ cup fresh blueberries, plus extra for garnish
  • 4 large basil leaves, plus extra for garnish
  • Ice

Directions:

Make Blueberry-Basil Syrup –

  • Combine the agave nectar, water, blueberries, and basil leaves in a small saucepan over medium heat.
  • Bring to a boil, stirring frequently, and continue to boil until the blueberries have popped and the sugar is dissolved, about 2 minutes.
  • Remove from heat, transfer to a heat-proof container, and then chill until cold.
  • Make the cocktails –
  • Fill a highball glass (or a pint Mason jar!) with ice, add in two tablespoons of the blueberry-basil syrup, followed by 1½ ounces of vodka. Fill to top with tonic water.
  • Garnish with extra blueberries and basil leaves, if desired.

Teenage Dream

Ingredients:

  • 1 small pineapple
  • 4 sprigs mint
  • 3 limes, quartered
  • 1/4 cup of Stevia or alternative sugar substitute
  • 1 1/4 cups Blue Ice Vodka
  • 2 limes, juiced
  • About 3 cups seltzer
  • Ice
  • Mint and pineapple for garnish

Directions:

  • Core and trim the pineapple. Cut 3 thin slices, halve them so they look like half moons, and reserve for garnish. Cut the rest into chunks.
  • Blend for 2-3 minutes until frothy and smooth. Strain through a sieve to remove the woody strands. 1 small pineapple should yield about 2 cups of juice.
  • In a wide-mouthed pitcher or a mixing bowl, muddle the mint and quartered limes with sugar alternative. The goal is to break up both the limes and mint and dissolve the sugar. The mint should be fragrant by the time muddling is done; the limes should have given off lots of juice; the sugar should be basically dissolved.
  • Add 2 cups of fresh pineapple juice, juice of 2 more limes, and the vodka. Stir.
  • Fill lowball glasses with ice.
  • Pour about 1/2 cup pineapple-lime-vodka mixture into each glass (should be about half full).
  • Top with seltzer.
  • Garnish with a slice of pineapple and a few extra mint leaves. Taste for balance of flavors, adding more vodka if you’d like to taste it.
