Scarcely a week goes by without an announcement of a new product/flavor/package from a major distiller. Three that got our attention:
Wild Turkey’s Spiced bourbon is positioned to take on rum. The flavor profile, slightly sweet and spicy, means it can be mixed with cola or consumed neat. Either way, it is meant to entice rum drinkers to switch to bourbon.
Absolut Tune is singing a national song. The strange pairing of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and Absolut vodka was available in selected markets last year. Set for a national launch, Absolut Tune is featured in a music video for Icona Pop for their latest single, “All Night”. The combination breaks down to 60% vodka and 40% wine. Add carbonation and very clever packaging in a champagne bottle and you have an interesting libation that is not quite sparkling wine and not quite spirits but feels celebratory. The 750 ml bottle retails for about $30. Look for it in wine and spirits stores. Absolut is owned by Pernod Ricard.
Another Pernod Ricard introduction is Pumpkin Spice Kahlua Liqueur. Available September until the end of December, it is a blend seasonal spices, pumpkin, coffee and rum. Sounds just right for a cold evening. It is priced around $17 for a 750 ml bottle. Pumpkin beer, wine and spirits? Nope. No wine yet but it could happen!
