If you are a craft beer fan or know someone who is, “The Audacity of Hops” is a must read. Written by Tom Acitelli and published by Chicago Review Press ($19.95), this book traces the advent of craft beers from Fritz Maytag’s purchase of Anchor Steam in 1965 to the plethora of beers available in local markets today. Before Prohibition, beer was quite a local thing with every city of any size having its own beer brewed locally.
Craft brewing is still relatively small when compared alongside the mega brands. It appeals largely to a younger, affluent demographic, but it is a growing category and its followers are vocal devotees anxious to explore new styles and tastes. That bodes well for the continued success of microbreweries. Check out “The Audacity of Hops”. Your favorite beer might be mentioned.
