Spirits Sales War Moves to Florida

Florida’s spirits retailers are up in arms over Walmart’s push to add spirits to their beverage alcohol line-up. In Florida, spirits retailers can only sell alcoholic beverages, mixes and tobacco. They must be separated from stores selling non-alcohol goods and cannot have doors connecting to any such establishment.
If Walmart succeeds, grocery chains and 7-Eleven stores will also be able to add spirits to their inventory. Beer and wine are not affected by this restriction.
Opponents claim that broader retail distribution will lead to more theft by minors. A bill is expected to be filed in the State Legislature in early March.
