Nov. 6, 2014 – Ardbeg Distillery in Scotland may have been founded the same year as the Battle of Waterloo, but they are certainly not resting on their laurels. They are so forward thinking that some of their whisky has spent three years in space.
A number of earthling whisky enthusiasts welcomed the vials back at a celebration at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York recently. No, they didn’t get to sample the galactic stuff. It was given to Dr. Bill Lumsden, Director of Distilling and Whisky Creation at Ardbeg. He will study the effects of microgravity and produce his findings sometime in 2015.
The vials will go on tour of the U.S. and other countries before being auctioned off, presumably for lots of money. We don’t know for sure but we hope the Sea, Air & Space Museum is the beneficiary. They invite donations on their web site.
Ardbeg has created a limited edition malt called Supernova 2014 to commemorate the return of the whisky vials to earth.
