Wine Judge for a Day: Fun and Interesting

April 14, 2015 – Five hundred wines, 160 “evaluators”, over 4,000 glasses, an entertaining seminar and 75 helpful volunteers added up to a great day at the Ninth Annual Consumer Wine Awards held on Saturday, April 11 in Sacramento.
The emphasis is on the consumer. The program’s founder, Tim Hanni, is dedicated to persuading the wine industry to make wines that consumers enjoy and to stop all the pretension and rules that are basically anti-consumer. For the past 20 years he has delved into why you like the wines you like (which is also the title of his fascinating book) and “ending the tyranny of the minority” which refers to the wine judges and professionals in the wine industry.
And what gives Timothy Hanni the chops to do this? Well, he’s one of the first two Americans to hold the title Master of Wine, is a Certified Wine Educator accredited by the Society of Wine Educators, and he is trained chef. Dubbed the “Flavor Maven” he is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking work on “Vinotyping”. A full report on this year’s Consumer Wine Awards is on our Wine page.
