Bootleggers’ Island For Sale

August 19, 2015 – A piece of Prohibition history can be yours for $3 million.  Whiskey Island, a part of Thousand Islands located in the St. Lawrence River, was a drop off point for alcohol being smuggled into the States from Canada during Prohibition.  The 18th Amendment went into effect on January 17, 1920 lasting until 1933.  Originally called Coral Island because of the shoals and rocks surrounding the island, it was a safe place for smugglers to hide the goods and retrieve them later.

Whiskey Island as it became known, is located at the southwestern end of the Thousand Islands near Lake Ontario.  It is nestled along the northern edge of upstate New York and minutes from the Canadian border. Ottawa is just 1.5 hours by car; Montreal is 2.5 hours and Toronto is 3 hours. The official address is Clayton, Thousand Islands, NY, USA.  The town of Clayton is 1.5 hours by car from Syracuse and 2.5 hours from Rochester.

For sale through VLADI PRIVATE ISLANDS www.vladi-private-islands.de, the 3.1 acre island consists of a completely renovated house built in 1875.  It has eight bedroom, four baths, commercial kitchen, family room and library/office.  It also has a two bedroom guest cottage, new boat house, swimming deck and deepwater dock.  You could recoup your investment by renting it out for $8,500 a week or $1,250 a night, minimum stay of four nights.

Imagine contemplating the view, glass of something distilled in hand, and conjuring up visions of the gunboats operated by the bootleggers being hastily unloaded right where your deepwater dock sits now.  No ghosts, only spirits in a bottle.
