September 3, 2015 – Imagine calling your girlfriends to meet you at Target for a cocktail. It might happen in Chicago because the word is that a new Target store in Chicago, scheduled to open this fall, has applied for two liquor licenses. One is to sell beer, wine and spirits. The second one is to serve beer, wine and spirits.
There’s no description of exactly how they propose doing this. Perhaps they are incorporating a chic restaurant into the new store, which is hardly revolutionary but a little unusual for Target.
Speaking of revolutionary reminded us of an old friend who visited Moscow in the late 50s, during the coldest time of the Cold War. He was amazed to find Champagne on tap at the GUM department store on Red Square. Of course it surely wasn’t real Champagne but probably something sparkly from Georgia or some other wine producing area that made up the old Soviet Union. He found it an odd juxtaposition to see very long lines of stoic Russians waiting to buy the limited consumer goods available, yet celebratory “Champagne” was on tap.
We’re not sure you can still get bubbles on tap in GUM but we’re pleased the civilized idea of having a drink is coming to Target.
