Message to Wine Educators: Stop Dissing Sweet Wines

September 9, 2015 — Tim Hanni, one of the first two Americans to become Masters of Wine in 1989, and wine educator par excellence is fed up with the wine industry and the community of wine educators in particular, for their snobbery and contempt for sweet wines and the consumers who enjoy them.

Tim has spent more 30 years exploring the science of taste and the response of the individual, as well as the myths promulgated by the wine industry that serve to confuse and even denigrate the consumer. He describes many pronouncements of food and wine pairing as “twaddle”. One of his favorite sayings is “Match the wine to the diner, not the dinner”.  And even more edgy, his research shows that people who prefer sweeter wines have the most sophisticated palates!  So if you like White Zinfandel with steak, rejoice.

Tim takes the industry to task for it arrogance plus its ignorance of wine history in a column on our Wine page and we’ve included his quiz to test your knowledge of wine and wine history.  Read the article then take the quiz.  It will help you with a couple of answers!  Then pour a glass of wine and feel empowered to enjoy whatever you like!
