Japanese Whisky Brings Record Price at Auction

September 18, 2015 – Move over Scotland. A whiskey made in 1960 by Japanese distiller Karuizawa just set a new record as the most expensive 700 ml bottle ever auctioned.
The Bonhams auction in Hong Kong fetched $96,774 (HK$750,000) for a single bottle. Only 41 bottles were released when the whisky was bottled in 2013. Japanese whisky was the main event at the record-breaking auction that totaled $1.68 million for the evening. Japanese whisky brought in $1.4 million; Scotch whisky realized $262,000, and American whiskey brought just $17,000 of which, $15,000 was spent on Pappy Van Winkle.
The Karuizawa distillery was founded in 1955 in Miyota, Japan. When you think about the centuries old Scottish industry, it is quite an amazing feat.
