October 2, 2015 – The Brewers Association reports that the number of breweries in the United States is now 4,000. That’s just shy of 4,131 recorded in 1873 but way better than the less than 100 in 1970.
The majority of these new breweries are small, local businesses brewing beer for specific communities and there is plenty of room for growth. Based on population, if the U.S. were to reach the per capita ratio of 1873, we would need more than 30,000 breweries! That’s unlikely to happen but as the Brewers Association points out, there are still 1,000 cities with populations of more than 10,000 that do not have their own local brew. So, would be brewers, opportunity still knocks and we’ll raise a glass to you and the 4,000 who have already made it.
