January 27, 2017 – Wondering why wineries never advertise during the Super Bowl? It’s because Anheuser-Busch has tied up exclusive rights excluding participation by any other alcohol brand since 1989. It’s also darned expensive. But where there’s a will there’s a way.
Yellow Tail, Australia’s number one selling wine in the U.S.A., has made independent deals with TV stations carrying the Super Bowl in 70 markets that will cover 85 percent of viewers. For anyone who is curious about how multi million ad deals are made, Advertising Age provides a blow-by-blow account.
The 30-second ad features a kangaroo called Roopert that looks real but is an animatronic kangaroo. Roopert flips burgers, goes to the beach and plays disc jockey. The human is known as Tall Guy in a very yellow suit. It’s fun and it will get plenty of attention.
