April 13, 2017 — In a new book, “How to Drink Like a Billionaire”, author and wine expert Mark Oldman divulges a secret of sommeliers and explains why the cheapest wine on the list is the best.
The sommelier or the restaurant’s wine buyer knows that most people feel embarrassed to order the cheapest bottle so they choose the second or third cheapest wine. The person in charge of the wine list is supposed to make money for the restaurant and they place wines with a high mark up in those popular slots. Accordingly, the cheapest priced wine is just as good and may even be better.
