Most Lake County Grapes Survive Fire

September 22, 2015 – Winegrape growers in Lake County are testing their grapes for smoke taint from the Valley Fire and so far the results indicate that about 85 percent of the county’s grapes have not been affected.  There are no elevated levels of 4-methylguaiacol and guaiacol, which relate to smoke flavors.

The rain and cool temperatures last week allowed many wineries to get back to harvest and crush.  Roads are reopening so that employees are returning to work.  However, power is out in some areas.  The tight-knit community is pulling together with wineries helping each other and all are thankful for the support of the more than 4,000 Cal Fire personnel who continue to struggle to contain the fire.

As of Sunday evening, Cal Fire’s tally of buildings burned was at 1,050, mostly homes as they haven’t yet counted barns, sheds and outbuildings.  Some mandatory evacuations are still in effect.
