Jan. 19, 2015 – Never underestimate the power of Twitter! Lagunitas Brewing Co. has dropped its suit against Sierra Nevada Brewing Company for trademark infringement. Lagunitas founder Tony Magee withdrew the suit after some of his fans hit the …t on Twitter.
The suit was over the typeface used for the letters ”IPA” by Sierra Nevada on their label, which appeared to be a knock-off of Lagunitas’ design. The latter’s distinctive serif font, spacing of the letters with no period between them is somewhat replicated on the Sierra Nevada label. Plus they are both black. But to us, Lagunitas looks much more distinctive with its weathered broken lettering. Was it worth suing over? Defending a trademark is crucial in business but some of Tony Magee’s 22,000 followers didn’t think so in this case. He listened to his public and dropped the suit. Would be great if more lawsuits were settled so easily.
