A Gallup survey of Americans who drink alcohol published July 23 confirms that beer remains the most popular choice among those who imbibe. For 41 percent it is first choice followed by wine at 31 percent and spirits in third place at 23 percent. That adds up to 95 percent so we’re curious what the missing five percent are drinking.
Wine was the overall beverage of choice in 2005 but beer recovered and currently shows a slight upward trend while wine is dipping a bit. Spirits also peaked in 2005 and remains fairly flat since then.
The number of drinkers in the total population has hovered around two thirds for decades except for a spike to 71 percent around 1975 dipping down to 56 percent in 1990.
Wine is preferred by forty-six percent of women but only 17 percent of men named it first choice.
