Lawmakers in Tennessee decided to put off a decision on what it takes to call a whiskey “Tennessee Whiskey”. The dispute is between Brown-Forman Corp. makers of Jack Daniels and Diageo PLC owners of George Dickel.
Brown-Forman likes the law the way it is requiring whiskey to be made in the state from at least 51% corn, filtered through maple charcoal and aged in new oak barrels in order to call it “Tennessee Whiskey” on the label. The problem for Diageo and other whiskey makers is the shortage of new barrels and they argue there should be flexibility in how they make their whiskey.
The lawmakers are taking the summer to think about it, possible over a tipple or two of, well, whiskey made in Tennessee.
