Dick Vermeil who grew up in Calistoga at the very north end of Napa Valley, has always stayed in touch with his roots even as his career as a football coach became the stuff of legends. Since 1999, he has dabbled in wine, producing about 150 cases with winemaker and family friend Paul Smith. In 2007, he decided to turn his hobby into a business increasing production to as much as 5,000 cases a year.
The Vermeil Wine Group has just opened a tasting room in downtown Napa. The focus is on wine and while there is plenty sports memorabilia, it is not to be confused with a sports bar. Vermeil describes it as more of a lounge and pointed out there is a VIP room that can be reserved for private tastings. The Vermeil wines ranging in price from $20 to $125 have earned scores above 90 points and excellent wine reviews.
