Suddenly It’s Cider

Cider has always been something of a stepchild but suddenly it is growing at the impressive rate of 110 percent in 2012. The major brewers have noticed, too. Boston Beer Co. launched Angry Orchard 2011 and is already at a whopping two million plus cases.

Miller Coors purchased Crispin Cider in 2012 and immediately doubled the volume to nearly three quarters of a million cases.

Anheuser-Busch InBev, which markets low calorie Michelob Ultra Light Cider has just launched Stella Artois Cidre (pronounced cee-druh). Described as more European in style, it is crisp, not as sweet as domestically produced cider, and could be a refreshing alternative to white wine. Apples are being sourced in both North and South America in order to have year ‘round supply. Stella Artois Cidre is already in 28 states with a full roll out nationally set for 2014. A four pack of 12 oz. bottles retails for around $7.49.
