Utah’s Stringent Liquor Laws Being Questioned

Ever heard of the “Zion curtain”?  That’s the cynical name applied to Utah’s law requiring a bartender to disappear into a back room or behind screens to mix a cocktail.  State lawmaker, Kraig Powell (R) wants to ease up on this law as well as allowing restaurant patrons to order a drink without first having to declare their intention to eat.

Rep. Powell points out that these bizarre practices hurt tourism.  Utah is a scenic state, has great skiing and lots of convention space.  But who wants to be given the third degree or wonder exactly what went into that cocktail?  The servers don’t like it either.  The restaurant, bar and tourism associations have lobbied for changes but Powell faces an uphill battle since a similar bill died last year in the state Senate and the Mormon Church strongly opposes the changes.
