Sileni Estates expands its Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc selections with the introduction of “The Straits”, a Reserve wine made from their best vineyard blocks in the Wairu, Waihopai and Awatere valleys. New Zealand owns the “new world” Sauvignon Blanc category with double digit growth year after year. Family owned and operated wineries like Sileni are an integral part of the increasing demand for delicious, food friendly Sauvignon Blanc.
We loved the huge grassy aroma when we poured our first taste, followed by a lovely mouthful of grapefruit and tropical fruits. Critics always talk about gooseberry flavors when they write about NZ Sauvignon Blanc. When is the last time you ate a gooseberry? Nor did we find the sweaty character famously described as “cat’s pee on a gooseberry bush”.
Nope. Sileni’s Reserve “The Straits” is an elegant wine that can be enjoyed as an aperitif or with many different foods. Seafood and pasta, of course, but also with barbecued chicken and grilled pork. At $16 it is well priced and something else we liked was the screw cap.
