Major Winery Moves from Glass to Plastic

October 2, 2015 – The fourth largest winery in the U.S., Bronco Wine Co., Ceres, CA, is testing two leading brands, Green Fin and Hacienda, in 750 ml PET bottles.  PET stands for polyethylene terephthalate, but we all knew that.  It is lightweight, and shatter resistant and recyclable.   Plastic bottles have been around for a while but Bronco is a very large company and what they do is watched by the industry.

Green Fin is organic wine and the PET bottles are being tested exclusively through Trader Joe’s stores nationwide.  Hacienda will be tested for first-class airline passengers.  Airlines are always looking for ways to save on weight.

The labels are PET also, reducing the use of paper, and the caps are tamper proof aluminum so that the entire package is 100% recyclable.

Another key sustainability feature is the use of a 12-count tray and shrink film cover instead of traditional corrugated cardboard cases and partitions. The shrink film packaging is 2.5 times lighter than a standard cardboard case and lowers carbon emissions by 246,771 lbs, according to Bronco.
